WHY DID IT HAPPEN?

The large Tisza river cyanide spill was devastating, and unexpected. The said disaster was caused by unexpected rainfall accompanied with snow, causing a reservoir to overflow, thus spill onto the Szamos River which is a tributary to the Tisza river, which in turn is a tributary to the Danube river.

The company that used the water [AURUL] was an Australian-Romanian mining company, they were mining non-ferrous materials from Baia Mare, and using cyanide laced water to extract and clean the materials mined.

The Poisoned Fish

For the people who don’t know exactly what cyanide is, cyanide is a very poisonous chemical, which can kill any organism that it comes in contact with. This water was stored in a nearby reservoir ready to be re-used in the cleaning process. The water was later found that it contained 7800mg of cyanide per litre, 300 times over the accepted limit. The reservoir was also kept overly full, so when the rain and the snow fell onto the reservoir it overflowed almost immediately.

All in all the Tisza cyanide pollution was caused by AURUL, misusing the cyanide laced water, adding too much of the said chemical and the unexpected rain, with snow all collaborated and created the Tisza cyanide pollution disaster.
